Barrar announces free tax service for veterans

Rep. Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) announced today that the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum is offering free tax preparation services to 150 area veterans.

"Filing taxes can be a stressful and confusing activity, but for 150 local veterans, the process will be simplified by the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum," said Barrar. "I applaud the museum for offering this service, and I encourage eligible veterans to apply."

To be eligible for the free service, one must be a Pennsylvania veteran earning less than $75,000 in annual income with no business or real estate investments.

To apply for assistance, call the museum at 610-566-5196. There are only 150 slots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those approved for the program will be notified, and asked to complete and return a program application before March 13.

Applications are available at SteveBarrar.com.

Those chosen to participate in the service will be required to provide the following documentation for tax preparation:

· Proof of identification

· W-2 forms

· 1099 forms

· Last year's tax return

· Mortgage related interest and expenses

· List of non-reimbursed work-related expenses

· List of non-reimbursed volunteer work expenses

· Settlement sheet HUD 1 for purchase of a new home

· Dealer invoice for purchases of a new or hybrid car

· Amount paid for medical insurance premiums and receipts for medical expenses

· Gifts to charities or non-profits (Donations of $250 or more require written acknowledgement from the recipients. Non-cash contributions of $500 or more require Form 8283.)

· Bills for home energy improvements (new hot water heater, new furnace, new roof, energy-efficient windows, insulation, etc.)

The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum is located at 12 East State Street in Media. It is open from noon to 5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.

All Pennsylvania income taxes must be filed by April 15, and forms are available at
