Summer Sports

By Cindy Crissman

When I started writing this article, I had planned on researching just one summer sport. The internet search engines located thousands of sports websites.  I found myself spending an endless amount of time searching, reading, and finding the right words to get the information I wanted from the search engines.  Before narrowing my searches, I found many eye-catching websites in the United Kingdom.  I narrowed my search to Pennsylvania, and having a disability, multiple sclerosis, I also looked for sports websites with information on accessibility and accommodations for disabled individuals.  The following two websites held my attention.

Easter Seals of South Central Pennsylvania has a Therapeutic Recreation section on their website.  They “work with disabled individuals, as well as their non-disabled family members”.  Their many programs include horseback riding, rock climbing, scuba diving, soccer, bowling, golf and fishing.  I’m not adventurous in the least.  My idea of a summer sport is getting in a chair with a glass of lemonade, and turning on a Pirates baseball game.  Although rock climbing and horseback riding did peak my interest.  Please look at their website, http://www.visiteasterseals.org/recreational.htm,   For those of you do like participating in sports, this website is well worth your time.

The Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks provides information on camping in over 280 state park cabins.  One of my childhood memories of growing up was sitting around a camp fire, roasting marshmallows, making mountain pies, and spending quality time with my family.  This website is excellent for information about different state parks.  Some areas covered are types of cabins, swimming, access for people with disabilities, and making reservations.  Visit http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/recreation/cabins.aspx, locate the area of the state you want to camp in by using a map of Pennsylvania divided into seven geographical areas.  Select the area and the state parks in that area are listed.  Then select the state park to get needed information.  Another site well worth your time.
